Locations in the Bible – Live Tracker

This post is being used to track the locations mentioned in the Bible and will be updated in real-time as I read. The tracker’s purpose is to be a reference document that I can return to each time a location is mentioned. If, after its first appearance, a location is mentioned again, I will update this post with the new information.

I am reading the English Standard Version (ESV). Published by Crossway in Illinois, USA. This edition printed 2016.

Eden (Garden) | Genesis 2:8

Eden is the location of the garden where the first man (Adam) was placed: ‘And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.’ [Gensis 2:8]

Inside the garden:

  • The tree of life was in the midst (middle).
  • The tree of knowledge of good and evil.

It seems that Eden is a place in and of itself and the garden was situated outside of it: ‘A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there (in the garden) it divided and became four rivers.’ [Genesis 2:10]

  • River 1: Pishon
  • River 2: Gihon
  • River 3: Tigris
  • River 4: Euphrates

The garden is given to man to work and keep.

God commands man ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’ [Genesis 2:15-17]

God then realises that it is not good that man should be alone and that he needs a ‘helper fit for him.’ [Genesis 2:18]:

  • God brings forth the beasts and livestock and birds for man to name.
  • Out of all these creatures man still finds no helper fit for him (this is the first time we hear him called Adam).
  • God puts man into a deep sleep, and as he slept took one of his ribs from which he made a woman. Man says: ‘This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man.’ [Genesis 2:23]

The garden is where the first man and woman get married [Genesis 2:24].

The garden of Eden is where the serpent tempts Eve into picking and eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. [Genesis 3:1-3:5]

The garden is the first time God is referenced as walking around as if he is human or in human form. [Genesis 3:8]

The first curses by God happen in the garden. Curses the serpent, Eve and then Adam for their parts of eating the fruit.

At the east of the garden of Eden, God places a ‘cherubim’ and a ‘flaming sword that turned every way’ to guard the way to the tree of life (that sits in the midst of the garden). [Genesis 3:24]

Havilah (land of) | Genesis 2:11

Said to be where the river Pishon flowed around ‘the whole land of Havilah.’

  • ‘where there is gold.’
  • ‘bdellium and onyx stone are there.’

Cush (land of) | Genesis 2:11

Said to be where the river Gihon flowed around ‘the whole land of Cush.’

Assyria | Genesis 2:14

The river Tigris flows east of Assyria: ‘which flows east of Assyria.’
