People and Entities in the Bible – Live Tracker

This post is being used to track the people and entities mentioned in the Bible and will be updated in real-time as I read. The tracker’s purpose is to be a reference document that I can return to each time a person or entity is mentioned. If, after their first appearance, a person or entity is mentioned again, I will update this post with the new information.

I am reading the English Standard Version (ESV). Published by Crossway in Illinois, USA. This edition printed 2016.

God, Lord, Yahweh | Genesis 1:1

The Creator of the Heavens and the Earth.

Spirit of God’ – [Genesis 1:2]

Walks around the garden of Eden (as if in human form). [Genesis 3:8]

God’s curses

Can place curses upon people, creatures and all of their offspring.
List of people/entities/things cursed:

  • Serpent [Genesis 3:14]
  • Eve [Genesis 3:16]
  • Adam [Genesis 3:17]

God has control over cherubim and flaming swords and can place them where he deems appropriate. [Genesis 3:24]

Adam (the first man) | Genesis 2:7

First mentioned as an entity in Genesis 2:7.
Named as Adam in Genesis 2:20.

Commanded not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Lives in the garden of Eden before being driven out.

After eating the fruit he becomes aware and ashamed of his nakedness, along with Eve. So the two of them made loincloths from fig leaves.

Hides from God due to being ‘afraid’ of his nakedness. Has a conversation with God which leads to him telling God he ate fruit because the woman gave it to him.

God curses Adam for listening to his wife and eating the fruit: ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, “you shall not eat of it,” cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field….you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.‘ [Genesis 3:17-3:19]

Driven out of the garden of Eden with Eve by God [Genesis 3:23].

Eve (the first woman) | Genesis 2:22

First mentioned as ‘woman’ in Genesis 2:22.
Named as Eve in Genesis 3:20. Eve sounds like the Hebrew for life-giver (according to ESV).

Created from the rib that God took from Adam.

Lives in the garden of Eden before being driven out.

Gets tempted by the serpent to take and eat fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. She also gives some fruit to Adam for him to eat: ‘So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes…she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.‘ [Genesis 3:6]

Due to eating the fruit, God curses Eve.

  • Multiply her pain in childbearing
  • Her husband shall rule over her

Has a garment made for her by God to cover her nakedness.

Driven out of the garden of Eden with her husband by God. [Genesis 3:23]

The Serpent | Genesis 3:1

Said to be more crafty than any beast of the field that God had created.

Appears to be able to speak to humans: ‘Did God actually say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden“?’ [Genesis 3:1]. Maintains a conversation with the ‘woman’.

The serpent convinces/tempts the woman to take the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and to eat it. She then gives a fruit to Adam as well. ‘For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.‘ [Genesis 3:5]

The serpent gets cursed by God for his part in The Fall: ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you…on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.‘ [Genesis 3:14]
