During Christmas 2024 I received a 48-set of Aedaga acrylic pens. I hadn’t used pens like them before, the closest being the waterbrush pens I bought earlier that year.
Not being familiar with them I wasn’t sure how to use them or what to draw with them. So I ended up doing a quick test drawing – literally drawing the setting in front of me, including the pens and my sketchbook.

A simple sketch, but I was pleased with the outcome. I decided that these pens would best be used in creating drawings similar to this going forward. Perfect for when you have limited time or just want to have a bit of a light creative moment.

I tried a more complex scene, as seen above. The great thing about this ‘style’ of drawing is that there is no need to be precious with the outcome. You can add bits in, leave bits out, get the perspective wrong, and none of it matters.

The latest drawing I did was this architectural scene in Ilford, London. I think it’s quite a powerful drawing, despite the cartoon cars being all wonky and out of control.
The great thing about these pens is how bold they are. You can’t really blend them in any real way, so it’s pretty much all or nothing. Stay tuned for more!
